Although a locking mechanism can fail with use over time, it will also fail if you have ever tried to open the oven door open before a cooling cycle ended or if you didn't have the latch handle move completely into the unlocked position. If the reset doesn't work and you don't get an error message, start and canceling another self-cleaning cycle can also result in the door unlocking when there's a sensor problem.
When the sensor does not work correctly, an error code may or may not appear on your stove's display, if applicable. To see if it works, first check that the circuit breakers switch for the stove isn't working, and then plug another appliance into the outlet to see if it works. If a power disruption causes your stove to not detect the end of the cycle or the internal oven temperature, it will not unlock.
